In a thrilling Euro 2024 quarter-final match, Spain emerged victorious over Germany with a 2-1 scoreline after extra time in Stuttgart. The game culminated in a late goal by Mikel Merino at the 119th minute, sending Spain into the semi-finals.

The Spanish team remains unbeaten in the competition, reaching the semi-finals of the Euros after a three-year hiatus since being eliminated by Italy in a similar stage. Spain will now await the winner between France and Portugal, who are currently playing in Hamburg.

Germany, who have not reached the semi-finals of a major tournament since Euro 2016, fell short again in their quest to progress further in the Euros despite an equalizing goal from Florian Wirtz in regulation time following an earlier goal by Dani Olmo.

Florian Wirtz’s late goal had momentarily raised hopes for the German side, but those hopes were dashed by Mikel Merino’s decisive strike after being set up superbly by Dani Olmo in extra time.

After a first half marred by missed opportunities for Germany, Dani Olmo found the back of the net in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Germany to slot home a low cross from Lamine Yamal.

Despite struggling with accuracy, Germany managed to level the score through an 89th-minute goal by Florian Wirtz, who expertly converted a header from Kimmich. The match headed into extra time with both teams seeking a winner.

In the additional period, Germany had their chances, with Wirtz coming close to scoring again but missing the target, while Unai Simon made a crucial save on a Füllkrug header. However, it was Spain who had the last laugh as Mikel Merino’s late header secured their spot in the semi-finals, breaking German hearts.
