Spain, Switzerland, Scotland, and Austria Qualify for 2026 World Cup
SEVILLA, Spain — Spain’s national football team has secured its spot in the 2026 World Cup, marking its thirteenth consecutive appearance in the tournament. The team, led by coach Luis de la Fuente, confirmed its qualification after a 2-2 draw against Turkey at La Cartuja Stadium on November 18, 2025.
Spain finished its qualifying campaign as the leader of Group E with 15 points, tied on points with Turkey. As the reigning European champion and the runner-up in the Nations League, Spain heads into the World Cup as one of the favorites to compete for the title.
The team has not missed a World Cup since 1974 and has participated in 16 tournaments overall. Spain’s successes include winning the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, as well as four European Championships and an Olympic gold medal.
Meanwhile, Switzerland clinched its World Cup spot after a tense 1-1 draw against Kosovo in Pristina on the same day. With this result, Switzerland finished top of Group B and remained undefeated throughout the qualifiers. The Swiss team, which debuted in the World Cup in 1934, has participated in every tournament since 2006.
In Hampden Park, Scotland ended a 28-year absence from the World Cup by defeating Denmark 4-2. The game was filled with dramatic moments, starting with a stunning goal from Scott McTominay in the third minute. Despite Denmark’s equalization through a penalty, Scotland took control after Denmark’s Rasmus Kristensen was sent off.
Coach Steve Clarke’s team capitalized on its advantage, with Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean sealing the victory in injury time. This will be Scotland’s ninth World Cup appearance after last competing in 1998.
Finally, Austria returned to the World Cup after nearly 30 years, defeating Bosnia 2-1. A pivotal goal from Michael Gregoritsch in the 78th minute secured their qualification. The match was played at Ernst-Happel-Stadion, where Austria, led by David Alaba, battled back from an early deficit to claim the top spot in Group H.
With these results, Spain, Switzerland, Scotland, and Austria will represent their countries at the upcoming World Cup in 2026, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
