Santi Denia Spain U 21 Coach Euro Championship

Las Rozas, SpainSanti Denia, the head coach of Spain’s U-21 soccer team, spoke to the media on May 26, 2025, after announcing the pre-list for the upcoming European U-21 Championship in Slovakia. Denia described this year’s selection process as the “most difficult” he has managed due to conflicts with the FIFA Club World Cup.

Denia explained that the new competition dates have made it challenging to field a complete squad. “We are victims of the calendar,” he said. “This is an important U-21 Euro where we cannot count on all the players we want, but we are pleased with those available to us.”

He emphasized the importance of player commitment, stating, “The main thing is that the player wants to come. Clubs are not obligated to release players, and we must prioritize the health of the athlete.”

In his discussion, Denia highlighted players like Gerard Martín, a key offensive player for Barcelona who he believes will significantly contribute to the team. He also praised Jesús Rodríguez from Real Betis, expressing optimism for his future with the senior team.

Meanwhile, Kike Salas, under investigation for possible betting irregularities, was also included in the roster. Denia defended his selection, saying that Salas has performed well for Sevilla and deserves his spot based on talent alone.

Denia noted notable absences, including Pablo Barrios, who is participating in the FIFA Club World Cup with Atlético Madrid, and Gabri Veiga, whose club did not allow him to take part. “There are players who should be with us, but we have a solid group ready to compete,” he stated.

The final selection of 23 players will be announced after a friendly match against Ukraine on June 6, followed by a training camp starting May 31. Denia is optimistic about the team’s potential to secure Spain’s sixth U-21 European title.
