Spanish Football Federation Reduces Goalkeeper Soriano’s Suspension
MADRID, Spain — The Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee has reduced the suspension of Leganés goalkeeper Juan Soriano after he was sent off during a recent match for throwing two balls onto the pitch from the bench. The incident occurred last Saturday, disrupting the game against Espanyol.
Soriano faced a potential two-match ban under Article 107.2 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which classifies such actions as “serious” misconduct. However, the club successfully appealed, arguing that the goalkeeper’s actions were unintentional and did not affect the match’s outcome. The committee downgraded the offense to “minor,” resulting in a one-match suspension to be served in the league rather than the Copa del Rey.
“The committee acknowledges the truth of the referee’s report regarding the facts that led to the player’s expulsion, which were not contested by the club,” the RFEF stated in its official communication. “After evaluating the circumstances, the actions are deemed to fall under Article 129 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, relating to conduct contrary to good sporting order.”
Leganés submitted a formal appeal, including a letter of remorse from Soriano and evidence of his previously unblemished disciplinary record. The club also questioned the severity of the initial classification, arguing that the incident had no impact on the match’s result or Espanyol’s players.
This decision allows Soriano to play in Leganés’ upcoming Copa del Rey match against Almería, a crucial fixture for the club. The goalkeeper traveled with the team ahead of the match, awaiting the committee’s final ruling.
This case highlights the RFEF’s willingness to consider context in disciplinary matters. In previous seasons, high-profile figures like Atlético Madrid’s Diego Simeone faced similar sanctions without reduction. Soriano’s case sets a precedent for future appeals involving minor infractions.
Meanwhile, other LaLiga teams are grappling with suspensions ahead of Matchday 20. Real Madrid will miss Luka Modrić and Vinícius Júnior, while Girona‘s Yangel Herrera and Las Palmas‘ Essugo are also sidelined. These absences could significantly impact the league standings as teams vie for crucial points.
