J.J. Spaun Wins U.S. Open with Stunning Late Rally

OAKMONT, Pa. — J.J. Spaun captured his first major championship by winning the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on Sunday. After a weather delay, Spaun surged to victory with four birdies on the back nine, finishing two strokes ahead of Robert MacIntyre.
Starting the final round, Spaun faced a challenging course and tough competition. Despite it all, he made an impressive comeback, sinking birdies on the 12th, 14th, and 17th holes. His final stroke, a remarkable long birdie putt on the 18th, sealed his victory.
“I never thought I’d be here holding this trophy,” said Spaun, who struggled with health issues in previous years. “I’m proud that I was resilient and pushed through a lot of things.”
Spaun, initially diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2018, later learned he had Type 1 diabetes. This diagnosis led to a significant drop in his world ranking. Spaun had earned his PGA Tour card after competing on the Korn Ferry Tour, showcasing his determination.
The stunning victory marks Spaun’s return to prominence in the golf world, having previously won the Valero Texas Open in 2022. He is now among an elite group of California natives who have won the U.S. Open this century.
Adam Scott, who finished tied for second, warmly congratulated Spaun, creating a full circle moment after Spaun looked to Scott for inspiration during earlier struggles.
The U.S. Open at Oakmont is known for its tough conditions, but the field was impacted by weather delays that softened the course. Spaun’s ability to adapt and perform under pressure highlights his skill and resilience.
“It was unbelievable,” said Viktor Hovland, Spaun’s playing partner for the final round. “This golf course is just a beast.”
Spaun’s journey from health struggles to a major champion serves as an inspiration for golfers everywhere. With his sights set high, Spaun has proven that tenacity and hard work can lead to triumph.
