Spencer Danielson Named on Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List
BOISE, Idaho — Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson has been named to the watch list for the distinguished Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award. He is one of 27 head coaches nationally recognized and stands as the sole representative from the Mountain West Conference.
In Danielson’s first full season at the helm, Boise State has attained substantial success, currently ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The team has posted a commendable 5-1 record, including a 2-0 mark in Mountain West play, while enjoying a four-game winning streak.
The retention rate under Danielson’s leadership is notable, with only one starter from the previous season’s Mountain West title team opting for the transfer portal. Danielson made an impactful interim debut last fall, steering the team to a 3-1 finish. “The award, given each January to a college football coach, recognizes contributions that make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity and a winning approach to coaching and life,” stated a release from the organizers.
Boise State has distinguished itself, ranking third among FBS programs in several offensive categories, including scoring offense, total offense, and rushing offense, after six games. The team averages 46.8 points, 523.0 total yards, and 289.8 rushing yards per game. On defense, the team acknowledges notable performers in Ahmed Hassanein and Jayden Virgin-Morgan, each contributing significantly to the team’s success in sacks.
The Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, facilitated by the American Heart Association and the Bryant family, honor collegiate coaches for their contributions to the sport. The awards aim to raise awareness and funds for cardiovascular disease research. Since Bear Bryant’s death from a heart attack in 1983, the ceremony has served as both a tribute and a legacy-building effort.
Looking ahead, Danielson and his Broncos will utilize their second bye week to prepare for a major Mountain West contest against UNLV, which also holds a 5-1 overall record. The game is scheduled for Friday, October 25th.
