CHICAGO — Goaltender Spencer Knight approaches his new role with the Chicago Blackhawks as the team gears up for the 2025-26 NHL season opener against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. Knight, who was traded from the Panthers on March 1, is set to return to face his former team during their Stanley Cup banner raising ceremony. The game will take place at Amerant Bank Arena at 5 p.m. ET.

“Honestly, I just look at myself as me. I don’t try to label myself as No. 1 or whatever,” Knight said when asked about expectations for his performance. His former teammate Sergei Bobrovsky has no doubts about Knight’s capabilities, stating, “He has all the ingredients to be one of the best goalies in the game.”

At just 24, Knight signed a three-year deal worth $17.5 million with the Blackhawks on September 13. Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson emphasized Knight’s importance to the team, saying, “Getting him under contract for the next few years gives him and us some runway to kind of further establish ourselves.”

In his previous season with the Panthers, Knight registered a 2.76 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage over 80 games. He faced challenges last year, not participating in the NHL for the 2023-24 season due to personal issues. Yet his determination to excel remains firm.

Competing with Bobrovsky for playing time in Florida was a significant hurdle. Bobrovsky, still going strong at 37, has consistently played over 50 games for past four seasons, earning two Stanley Cup championships. While Knight acknowledges the tough competition, he is excited to embrace his new challenge with the Blackhawks.

“It’ll be cool. Obviously, a lot of familiar faces, familiar place,” Knight said about returning to the Panthers. “I haven’t really looked too far ahead, but it’ll be good to get the season rolling.”

During training camp, Knight has built rapport with his Blackhawks teammates, particularly the younger defensemen. Defenseman Sam Rinzel noted Knight’s active presence during games, stating, “He’s very engaged in the game, so as a ‘D,’ I enjoy that.”

Knight is also fine-tuning his skills with Blackhawks goalie coach Jimmy Waite, focusing on technical adjustments to enhance his game further. Waite believes Knight’s strong work ethic and focus will serve him well in the upcoming season.

As Knight prepares to step into his role as the starting goalie, he reflects on his journey. “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and you know what; I wouldn’t trade it for the world… I know I can handle whatever comes my way,” Knight said. “So, I’m just excited for that.”
