Spencer Lee Eyes Gold In Paris Olympics

Spencer Lee is currently representing Team USA in the 57 kg weight class at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. After a successful morning of wrestling, Lee is just one match away from securing a gold medal.

In his first bout, Lee squared off against China’s Wanhao Zou. Lee set the pace early, getting Zou on the activity clock just a minute in. A right-side single takedown put Lee ahead 3-0 going into the break. The second period saw a cautious approach from both wrestlers, with Zou eventually scoring a point from a stepout. Lee managed to hold on and won the match with a final score of 3-2.

Next up for Lee was a match against Bekzat Almaz Uulu of Kyrgyzstan, a formidable U23 World bronze medalist. Lee quickly took control, earning multiple takedowns and a commanding lead, eventually winning the match with a technical fall at 12-2.

In the semifinals, Lee faced Gulomjon Abdullaev from Uzbekistan, a former Olympian. Lee opened strong with a single-leg takedown and showcased his skills with multiple moves that led to an impressive 14-4 technical fall, securing his spot in the finals.

Now, all eyes are on Lee as he prepares to face Japan‘s Rei Higuchi, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2022 World champion. This matchup promises to be thrilling as both wrestlers have shown exceptional performance throughout the tournament.

Lee hopes to make history as he aims for gold. If he wins, he would join an elite group of Iowa wrestlers who have achieved Olympic gold, with his coach, Tom Brands, supporting him in his corner.

After a tough loss in his senior season’s NCAA semifinals, Lee took time to clear his mind in Japan, where he connected with Higuchi’s journey. Both athletes are eager to battle it out for gold in what should be a spectacular final match.
