Spieth Aims for Career Grand Slam at PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jordan Spieth is set to attempt to complete the career Grand Slam this week at the PGA Championship, held at Quail Hollow Club. This will be Spieth’s ninth chance to win the tournament after narrowly missing in previous years.
Spieth, who last won a major in 2017 at the British Open, aims to follow Rory McIlroy, the only active player to have won the Grand Slam. McIlroy recently achieved this milestone after winning the Masters.
During a Tuesday news conference, Spieth joked about Quail Hollow being the ‘Country Club of Rory McIlroy’ and expressed that the pressure surrounding the Grand Slam hasn’t always followed him in past years when he wasn’t in top form. “There have been years I’ve come to the PGA and no one’s really asked me about it,” he said.
This year, Spieth is among the favorites, particularly after recovering from wrist surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath. He reported that he is feeling significantly better since the procedure. “The ease of not worrying about it dislocating… is really nice,” Spieth said.
In his recent season, Spieth has already recorded three top-10 finishes, highlighting his return to strong performance after a challenging 2024. Despite his efforts, he hasn’t won on the circuit in 66 events, which he recognizes as a tough spot in his career.
<p“Everybody who's come back from an injury wants to do more… It's just a hard process to be patient with,” Spieth added, reflecting on his journey. His best PGA Championship finishes include a T-3 in 2019, but he has finished outside the top 25 in his last six attempts.
<pSpieth acknowledged that winning at Quail Hollow would make him just the seventh golfer in history to complete the Grand Slam. “If I could win one tournament for the rest of my life, I’d pick this one,” he noted.
<pAs golf fans eagerly anticipate this week’s action, the possibility of Spieth achieving this historic feat is creating buzz. He understands the significance and hopes to break through this time around. “I’d love to throw my hat in the ring and give it a chance come the weekend,” Spieth said.
