Sporting Kansas City Acquires Allocation Money from Charlotte FC in Roster Slot Trade
Sporting Kansas City has made a significant roster move ahead of the 2024 MLS season, acquiring General Allocation Money (GAM) from Charlotte FC in exchange for international roster spots. The trade sees Sporting Kansas City receive $200,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money and $150,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money.
GAM can be used by Sporting Kansas City to manage their roster, including lowering a player’s Salary Budget Charge and staying within the league’s salary cap restrictions. This transaction allows the club to have more flexibility in signing and retaining players.
With this trade, Sporting Kansas City now possesses five international roster spots for the upcoming season. The MLS Roster Compliance Date, set for February 23, requires all clubs to ensure their rosters and budgets comply with league regulations prior to the start of the regular season.
The sports franchise’s preseason campaign will continue on Tuesday, with a match against Nashville SC at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. The regular season will kick off for Sporting Kansas City on February 24 with an away game against rivals Houston Dynamo. The team’s highly anticipated home opener at Children’s Mercy Park will take place on March 2, as they face the Philadelphia Union.
This roster slot trade signifies the clubs’ proactive approach in fine-tuning their squads and optimizing their resources ahead of the new season. Both Sporting Kansas City and Charlotte FC will be looking to make an impact and improve upon their performances from the previous campaign.
