Spring Activities Blooming in Rock Creek Park This March

Washington, D.C. — As spring approaches, several exciting events are set to take place in Rock Creek Park and the surrounding areas. The Rock Creek Morris Women will celebrate the season with traditional English Morris dancing on multiple dates, bringing cultural vitality to the community.
The Morris dance troupe will perform at the historic Peirce Mill barn, welcoming the arrival of spring with lively dances. Their performances not only showcase tradition but also engage community members in seasonal rituals that date back centuries.
In addition to vibrant cultural displays, the National Park Service will offer guided hikes focused on the park’s spring awakening. These two- to three-mile hikes are scheduled for Fridays and Sundays, specifically on March 23 and March 30. Park rangers will highlight areas where wildflowers begin to bloom, providing both educational insight and the chance to appreciate nature’s beauty.
For those who enjoy musical performances, the UDC Chorale will hold its spring concert at the UDC Theater of the Arts on Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m. This event promises to be a delightful experience for attendees, showcasing local talent and community spirit.
The community is also encouraged to participate in spring cleaning at Forest Hills Park. The Good Clean Fun Initiative, organized by Van Ness Main Street, invites volunteers to gather at the park on Saturday, March 7, at 9:30 a.m. Participants will be provided with clean-up supplies and refreshments. Additional clean-up events are planned for May 10, July 12, and September 13.
As part of March’s festivities, Hillwood Museum will celebrate orchid month, honoring Marjorie Post‘s favorite flower. The museum boasts more than 2,000 orchids, which include 1,200 species, hybrids, and clones. Visitors can join tours and workshops throughout the month to learn more about these exotic blooms.
Moreover, residents are invited to beautify the Connecticut Avenue Pollinator Corridor by participating in a community planting event on March 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This initiative, in partnership with Van Ness Main Street, will take place near the Franklin Montessori School at 4473 Connecticut Ave. Participants should RSVP to Kathy Sykes to reserve their spots.
Neighborhood volunteer days will also focus on removing invasive plants in Rock Creek Park. Meetings are organized for Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, behind Broad Branch, near Politics and Prose, on March 8, 15, and 29. There will also be meet-ups at Reservation 630W at the corner of Tilden and Reno Road on March 16, 21, and 29. Volunteers can sign up through Rock Creek Conservancy by emailing their preferred dates.
