Spurs Face Tough Decision on Stephon Castle Amid De’Aaron Fox Trade Rumors
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the San Antonio Spurs are at the center of swirling rumors involving Sacramento Kings star De'Aaron Fox. Fox, who has reportedly expressed interest in joining the Spurs, could be a game-changing addition to a team already boasting rising star Victor Wembanyama. However, any deal for Fox would likely require the Spurs to part with prized rookie Stephon Castle, a decision that has sparked intense debate among analysts and fans alike.
Fox, a 27-year-old All-NBA guard, is averaging 25.1 points and 6.1 assists this season, making him one of the league’s most dynamic players. His ability to score in clutch moments and lead an offense has made him a coveted asset for teams looking to compete for championships. For the Spurs, pairing Fox with Wembanyama could create a formidable duo capable of contending in the Western Conference.
However, acquiring Fox would come at a steep cost. The Kings are reportedly interested in Stephon Castle, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Castle, a 20-year-old guard out of UConn, has shown flashes of brilliance in his rookie season, averaging 12.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His defensive versatility and playmaking potential have made him a key piece of the Spurs’ future plans.
According to ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst, the Spurs value Castle highly and consider him untouchable in most trade scenarios. “If there was a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Luka Doncic on the table, they might consider it. But I don’t know if De’Aaron Fox rises to that level,” Windhorst said. “They may believe Castle will be comparable to Fox in a couple of years.”
Castle’s recent performances have only bolstered his case to remain in San Antonio. Over the past eight games, he has scored 20 or more points five times, including standout performances against playoff-caliber teams like the LA Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks. His ability to defend multiple positions and create offense has made him an invaluable asset alongside Wembanyama.
Advanced metrics further highlight Castle’s impact. Since Jan. 1, the Spurs are outscoring opponents by 1.0 point per 100 possessions with Castle on the court, compared to being outscored by 11.8 points when he sits. This 12.8-point disparity underscores his growing importance to the team. Additionally, lineups featuring both Castle and Wembanyama rank in the 67th percentile in net rating, suggesting the duo has the potential to become one of the league’s most effective pairings.
Despite Fox’s proven track record, some argue that trading Castle would be shortsighted. “Castle may or may not become the borderline elite player that Fox is, but he has all of the tools to thrive,” said one analyst. “He fits a rare archetype as a 6’6″ perimeter menace with defensive potential and playmaking ability.”
The Spurs’ decision will ultimately hinge on their confidence in Castle’s development. If they believe he can grow into a star alongside Wembanyama, they may opt to keep him and pass on a deal for Fox. However, if they prioritize immediate contention, trading Castle for Fox could be the move that propels them into the playoff picture.
As the trade deadline looms, the Spurs face a pivotal choice: bet on the future with Castle or go all-in on the present with Fox. Either way, the decision will have lasting implications for the franchise.
