San Antonio Spurs Players Celebrating On The Court

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — After a pivotal game on March 12, 2025, between the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks, Keldon Johnson received encouragement from Victor Wembanyama, who is sidelined for the season due to deep vein thrombosis. Wembanyama’s text reading ‘Great win’ underscored his ongoing presence in the team’s spirit, even as he could not contribute on the court.

“We know that when Vic’s here, it’s just a whole other level,” Johnson said, emphasizing Wembanyama’s positive influence on his teammates. Johnson acknowledged the difficult absence left by the young star, stating, “Not having him here, it sucks, but we know that if he was here, this is how he would want it.”

The team has seen substantial changes this season, including the departure of head coach Gregg Popovich as he focuses on recovering from a mild stroke and the adjustment that comes with losing players like De'Aaron Fox who opted for surgery on his finger. Fox’s injury added another layer of challenge for the Spurs as they chased a spot in the Western Conference.

“Everybody was upset,” said Sandro Mamukelashvili, reflecting on the loss of their key players. “He was hooping.” Despite the challenges, the Spurs fought against the odds and used basketball as a refuge. Acting coach Mitch Johnson remarked, “When you’re on the court, it just becomes a game … It’s their sanctuary; a getaway.”

The unpredictability of the season extended beyond injuries. A light-hearted prank by Mamukelashvili on rookie Stephon Castle, where he removed all four tires from Castle’s car, injected a sense of camaraderie into the locker room. “I was shook,” Castle said, recalling the moment as teammates cheered and celebrated their victories on the court.

Fox, who had joined the Spurs shortly before undergoing his surgery, expressed his hope for quick recovery. “I don’t need to understand, as long as I’ll be fixed, I’m good,” said Fox. His swift recovery is pivotal for the team’s plans moving forward. Within the brief time Fox and Wembanyama played together, the Spurs saw a glimpse of their potential, earning two wins through that partnership.

“We want to be able to grow together in the offseason,” Fox added, showing confidence in the team’s future direction. The need for collective progress amidst setbacks remains a resounding mantra within the Spurs organization. Johnson noted, “He has to step up for San Antonio. That’s part of the deal.”

Despite the adversity, the Spurs managed to secure two wins in their recent outings. Johnson’s ongoing strength and resilience have emerged as vital to the Spurs as they navigate this tumultuous season. “Basketball is therapy,” Johnson said. “It’s like an escape … my escape from reality.”

The players aim to keep their spirits high as they address the hurdles each day. “When the game comes around, we’ve got a job to do,” veteran Chris Paul asserted to reinforce the focus on competition despite ongoing struggles.

Amid the frustrations and obstacles, San Antonio’s roster has remained resolute in carrying the torch for the absent Wembanyama and other sidelined members. “We came together when in need,” Johnson noted, expressing an eagerness to reunite the team once Wembanyama returns to the court.

With a resurgent fighting spirit, the San Antonio Spurs continue to look onward and upward, embracing the journey and awaiting the full strength of their team.
