Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga Makes History with 100 T20I Wickets
Sri Lanka‘s cricket sensation, Wanindu Hasaranga, has etched his name in the record books by crossing the monumental 100-wicket mark in T20 Internationals, becoming just the second Sri Lankan bowler to achieve this feat after the legendary Lasith Malinga.
The talismanic leg-spinner and current T20I captain reached the milestone during a thrilling encounter against Afghanistan in the picturesque setting of Dambulla. His journey to the top has been nothing short of remarkable, with Hasaranga emerging as the leading wicket-taker at the prestigious ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
Since his debut in 2019, Wanindu Hasaranga has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in the T20 arena, outshining all other bowlers with his remarkable bowling prowess. With this achievement, he joins the elite club of players with over 100 wickets in men’s T20Is, a list previously dominated by the likes of Malinga and Rashid Khan.
Lasith Malinga, the legendary Sri Lankan pacer, set the benchmark by reaching the 100-wicket milestone in his 76th T20I appearance. In a stunning display of talent and consistency, Hasaranga managed to achieve the same feat in just 63 matches, making him the second-fastest to 100 T20I wickets, only behind the Afghan sensation Rashid Khan, who achieved the milestone in 53 matches back in 2021.
At the heart of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, Wanindu Hasaranga has been a key asset for his team, delivering exceptional performances on the biggest stages. His recent exploits at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 showcased his ability to thrive under pressure, cementing his reputation as one of the best spinners in the game.
In the recent clash against Afghanistan, Hasaranga once again exhibited his skill and control, finishing with impressive figures of 2/19 in his quota of four overs. With a total of 101 wickets in 63 T20Is at an exceptional average of 15.36 and a miserly economy rate of 6.78, Hasaranga has set the bar high for aspiring bowlers around the world.
Sri Lanka’s victory over Afghanistan in the second T20I not only underlined their dominance in the series, taking a commanding 2-0 lead, but also highlighted the invaluable contribution of Wanindu Hasaranga to the team’s success. As the cricketing world celebrates this historic achievement, all eyes are now on Hasaranga’s continued brilliance in the T20 arena.
