Giancarlo Stanton Yankees Return News

BRONX, New York — New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman announced Sunday that slugger Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return from his injuries. Stanton, who hasn’t played this season due to tennis elbow in both arms, has recently started taking batting practice with a pitching machine and participating in baserunning drills.

Cashman confirmed that while Stanton hinted at not needing a minor-league rehab stint, the Yankees might prefer he gains those reps before being activated. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone stated, “We just want to make sure that he’s game ready when he comes.” He emphasized that Stanton will be involved in decisions about his rehabilitation.

In the meantime, the Yankees managed to secure a close 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, sustaining their streak of six consecutive series wins. J.C. Escarra had a three-hit game, while Aaron Judge delivered a crucial go-ahead RBI. Despite the Rockies’ poor record this season, the win was important for the Yankees to maintain momentum.

The Yankees are also actively looking to acquire a right-handed bat, especially for third base, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The New York lineup, largely left-handed outside of Aaron Judge and Paul Goldschmidt, faces challenges, especially with Oswaldo Cabrera likely out for the season due to injury. Potential targets include Otto Lopez from the Marlins, Lenyn Sosa, and Amed Rosario from the Nationals.

As the season progresses, the Yankees’ pitching staff stands out for its focus on control and movement rather than velocity. Recently activated reliever Jonathan Loáisiga is a notable exception, bringing a fastball that reaches the high-90s.

In other news, Cooper Hummel signed with the Orioles on Sunday, just a day after the Yankees released him. Hummel had played for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate before exercising a contract clause that forced the team to add him to their active roster or relinquish him to free agency. He will earn $765,000 this season if he remains with the Orioles.
