Steelers Acquire DK Metcalf: What’s Next for George Pickens?

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — After a tumultuous postseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant move by trading for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. The acquisition, confirmed on March 9, 2025, involved sending a second-round pick in the 2025 draft along with a swap of sixth- and seventh-round picks to Seattle. Metcalf is set to sign a lucrative extension worth $150 million over five years.
This monumental signing raises questions about the future of Steelers receiver George Pickens, who is entering the final year of his contract, earning $3.4 million in 2025. With Metcalf’s new-money average at $33 million, the disparity brings into focus Pickens’ potential position with the team.
“The Steelers are known for their ability to scout and develop wide receivers, and Pickens could be among those evaluated in the upcoming weeks,” said a source familiar with the team’s strategy. Rumors are swirling regarding Pickens’ future, with speculation on whether he could be traded or kept for another season.
The Steelers’ general manager, Omar Khan, expressed optimism about retaining Pickens following the trade. However, the emergence of Metcalf as a No. 1 option complicates the situation as he could demand a contract similar to Metcalf’s. This complexity arises amid a backdrop of Pickens’ off-the-field issues that have raised eyebrows within the organization.
“We want to ensure we have the best players in Pittsburgh, and right now, we have two incredibly talented receivers,” Khan explained. “Our aim is to make solid decisions that benefit the team long term.”
Metcalf adds a dynamic element to Pittsburgh’s offense, which has struggled in recent seasons, averaging just 14.2 points per game in their final five matches. With Metcalf’s proven track record of being a big-play threat—he is ranked No. 15 in the league for receiving yards over the last two years, accumulating 2,106 yards—he is expected to bolster the receiving corps significantly.
The Steelers are also facing questions about their quarterback situation, as they currently do not have a player under contract. Many speculate they may look to re-sign players or explore other options in free agency to ensure the offense runs effectively.
A potential split from Pickens could occur if the Steelers find a favorable trade deal. They could seek to add another veteran receiver in free agency, which could include names like Darius Slayton, as they navigate this pivotal offseason.
“The arrival of Metcalf changes the entire landscape for everyone, including George. It will be interesting to see how he adapts and thrives alongside such a gifted receiver,” said former NFL executive Daniel Jeremiah. “If it goes well, they might stick around for the long haul. If not, it could be a short stay for Pickens.”
