Steelers Coaching Shakeup: Two More Assistants Could Depart

Pittsburgh Steelers Coaching Staff Changes

PITTSBURGH — With the Pittsburgh Steelers already experiencing coaching turnover, further departures are anticipated as the organization navigates a shift in its assistant coaching staff.

Recently, inside linebackers coach Aaron Curry accepted a position as linebackers coach for the New York Jets, while secondary coach Grady Brown left the Steelers following the expiration of his contract. The team is now looking at potential exits for additional coaches, according to Chris Halicke of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin are both in uncertain positions regarding their contracts. Sources from Penn Live suggest the Steelers might allow both contracts to expire, which could lead to a complete overhaul of the defensive coaching staff.

Dunbar and Martin have both coached elite talent during their tenure with the Steelers, working with standout players such as T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, and Alex Highsmith. If they leave, the team’s defensive schemes could face significant changes, impacting the performance of its top athletes.

Current rules would require the Steelers to take action to retain Dunbar and Martin, but the organization appears to be leaning towards letting them go. Meanwhile, Teryl Austin is expected to remain at the helm as the defensive coordinator for now, although his support staff could change significantly.

While the move could herald a rejuvenated approach for the Steelers’ defense, it remains unclear how this shift could affect on-field performance. Notably, the offensive side of the ball has seen little change, even as it showed growing promise last season.
