PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers made a notable selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, choosing Washington linebacker Carson Bruener with the 226th overall pick in the seventh round. Bruener, who is 6-foot-1 and weighs 227 pounds, has a family connection to the team; he is the son of former Steelers tight end and current scout Mark Bruener.

“This is a dream come true,” said Bruener, expressing his excitement after receiving the call from the Steelers. “It’s something special for sure. I can’t wait to get started. It does not seem real. I’m sitting in the same spot my dad got drafted in 30 years ago at our cabin. It’s a full circle moment. It’s crazy.”

During his college career, Bruener played in 52 games for the Huskies, finishing with 306 tackles, including 180 solo stops, ten tackles for loss, and three interceptions in 2024. His ability to contribute on special teams also stood out to the Steelers. “Special teams is something I started playing early in my career, and I really fell in love with it,” he said. “I know that’s something I am going to be able to bring to Pittsburgh for sure.”

In 2024, Bruener put up impressive statistics with 104 tackles, three interceptions, and eight passes defensed. NFL scouts recognized him for his physical play and leadership abilities. “He’s a tackling machine, tough as nails, and a good communicator,” noted a scouting report. “While he may not have the ideal speed, his special teams performance will be enticing to teams looking for depth in that area.”

Bruener was unsure the Steelers would draft him, noting he was with his family, including his father, at their cabin when the call came through. “We had no idea they would call. Two seconds after my dad said they could take me, I got the phone call from Pittsburgh. It was a crazy moment,” he recalled.

The Steelers have focused on bolstering their defense in this draft, previously selecting defensive tackle Derrick Harmon and linebacker Jack Sawyer among others. Bruener joins a linebacker corps with players like Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson, and Cole Holcomb. “I’m excited to compete for a spot and contribute to the team,” Bruener added. “I just want to do whatever it takes to help the Steelers win.”
