Pittsburgh Steelers Courtland Sutton Trade Rumors

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly interested in wide receiver Courtland Sutton from the Denver Broncos ahead of the NFL free agency period. Sources indicated that discussions about a potential trade could heat up following the NFL Combine, where teams can begin negotiating with players on March 10.

Sutton, a veteran player and team captain for the Broncos, is seeking a substantial contract increase of over $20 million per year, complicating his situation with the team. Broncos General Manager George Paton reaffirmed his desire to keep Sutton, stating, “Courtland is one of our guys, team captain… We want him here.” However, the uncertainty around his contract could lead to the Broncos reconsidering their options.

Last year, the Steelers made efforts to acquire Sutton but were unable to complete a deal. With the Broncos potentially open to trading Sutton if they can receive a suitable offer—possibly a Day 2 draft pick—the Steelers might find themselves in a favorable position if Sutton hits the market. “I would not be surprised if the Broncos jettison Courtland Sutton… for a pair-up with [Steelers wide receiver] George Pickens,” noted insider Ben Allbright during a recent session.

Sutton has expressed a desire for a new contract, which could push the Broncos to reassess their roster. Having played under Steelers wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni in Denver, Sutton has a connection with the team that may make a transition smoother. Furthermore, the Steelers are likely to explore all avenues to bolster their wide receiver corps this offseason, considering the struggles they’ve faced in that department

“The Steelers have been on the hunt for an upgrade at wide receiver for over a year… and attacking the situation aggressively is expected,” a source close to the team said.

As the free agency period approaches, Sutton’s status remains uncertain, yet his skills—evidenced by his 2024 season in which he recorded over 1,000 receiving yards—make him an attractive target for the Steelers. Should the Broncos ultimately decide to part ways with Sutton, it is anticipated that Pittsburgh will be a strong contender for his services.

With limited value seen in this year’s free-agent wide receiver class, the Steelers may prioritize acquiring Sutton instead of pursuing higher-cost options, positioning them as leaders in the race should he become available. The Steelers have approximately $43 million in cap space to navigate during this offseason, allowing them the flexibility to pursue key targets.
