Steelers Face Dilemma Over George Pickens’ Future Amid Contract Talks
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers are grappling with a critical offseason decision regarding wide receiver George Pickens, whose contract extension talks remain unresolved. During a season-ending press conference Tuesday, head coach Mike Tomlin avoided committing to prioritizing Pickens’ extension, leaving fans and analysts speculating about the young star’s future with the team.
Pickens, 23, is the Steelers’ most dynamic offensive weapon, finishing the 2024 season with 900 receiving yards and 59 catches despite missing three games. However, his off-field behavior and occasional on-field antics have raised concerns about his maturity and long-term fit with the franchise. Tomlin acknowledged Pickens’ potential but emphasized the need for growth. “There’s a lot of room for growth there. He covered some ground in 2024, but there’s certainly more to be done,” Tomlin said.
One incident that highlighted Pickens’ disciplinary issues occurred on Christmas Day, when he reportedly arrived so late to Acrisure Stadium that the inactive list for the game against the Kansas City Chiefs had to be submitted before he arrived. Despite this, Pickens dressed and played in the game. When asked about the incident, Tomlin deflected, saying, “I really don’t know that I have the answer to that.”
Pickens’ talent is undeniable, but his behavior has created a dilemma for the Steelers. Extending his contract could cost the team upwards of $30 million annually, a significant investment for a player with a history of immaturity. Yet, trading him or letting him play out his rookie contract could leave the Steelers without their top offensive threat. “He’s their only viable, starting-caliber wide receiver,” said one analyst. “But can they trust him with a long-term deal?”
The Steelers’ 2024 season ended in disappointment, with a four-game losing streak and a first-round playoff exit. As the team evaluates its roster, Pickens’ future remains a top storyline. Whether the Steelers choose to extend, trade, or retain him for his final contract year, the decision will have significant implications for the franchise’s direction.
