Steelers Face Key Quarterback Decision Ahead of Jets Clash

Pittsburgh Steelers Vs New York Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently grappling with an important decision as they prepare to face the New York Jets this weekend. The team’s first-year offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, is tasked with developing a winning strategy, while head coach Mike Tomlin will determine which quarterback will take the field. Smith emphasizes that his focus remains firmly on crafting a game plan that can outmaneuver the Jets, regardless of the quarterback choice.

The question is whether to retain Justin Fields as the starter or return to Russell Wilson, who was originally named the starter before the season but was sidelined due to injury. Fields has led the team to a 4-2 record so far in the season. Mike Tomlin revealed that Wilson, who served as backup during last weekend’s victory over the Raiders, is a candidate for the starting position against the Jets.

Currently, the Steelers’ offense ranks 26th overall in the NFL, averaging 298 yards per game. The team, however, showed a marked improvement by achieving a season-high 32 points against Las Vegas, moving up to 20th in points per game at 20.7. A significant challenge remains in the passing game, with an average of 166.8 yards per game, ranking 28th in the league.

Smith expressed the desire for a perfect record, stating, “We wish we were 6-0. We’re not. You are what your record says you are, so we’re 4-2.” He acknowledged progress in some areas and pointed out the challenges posed by different opponents. “There are always things we’ve got to fix,” he added.

Against the Jets, the Steelers expect a tough battle in the air, given New York’s renowned secondary, including players such as Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed, and Michael Carter. Both Reed and Carter have missed practice this week, leaving their status for the game uncertain.

“The Jets have limited opponents to virtually no 300-yard passing games,” Smith noted. He recognizes the difficulty in their robust pass defense and the need to strategize effectively to succeed. “We’re going to do everything in our power to win every rep,” he asserted.

Arthur Smith highlighted the importance of maintaining transparency and communication within the team, especially when making pivotal decisions. “Whatever decision is made, you need to explain it how you see fit,” Smith said, accepting that not everyone may agree with the final call.
