Steelers Quarterback Decision Free Agency 2025

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — With the NFL‘s 2025 free agency period on the horizon, the Pittsburgh Steelers are confronted with significant decisions regarding their quarterback situation. Russell Wilson, who joined the Steelers last season, may have played his final snaps in a Steelers uniform as the team considers younger, more cost-effective options.

The Steelers’ front office is weighing the potential of Justin Fields, who has shown promise during his tenure, against bringing Wilson back, particularly as the organization looks to strengthen the quarterback room beyond 2025.

“With options like Fields, who provides a younger alternative, planning ahead is critical for Pittsburgh,” said sports analyst Tom Brolley. Fields was acquired by the Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick and began the season with a commendable 4-2 record before Wilson took over as the starter.

Wilson, 37, delivered a mix of experience and challenges, leading the team to a playoff berth but finishing the season with a record of 5-6 after dropping five consecutive games. This included a Wild Card Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“Russ showed he could still be competent, but the question is whether he can remain a starter in this league at his age,” Brolley added.

As the Steelers evaluate their options, they are not alone. Other teams, notably the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings, are also looking for a veteran presence or potential short-term solutions at quarterback. The Raiders, under head coach Pete Carroll, could benefit from Wilson’s experience, while the Giants are seeking replacements following a disappointing spell with Daniel Jones.

“New York is in a tough spot; if they decide to move on from Jones, Wilson could serve as a bridge or even a mentor for their next franchise quarterback,” said Brolley.

In Minnesota, with uncertainty around Sam Darnold’s future, Wilson’s addition could provide stability for an offense desperately in need of direction.

Meanwhile, the New York Jets are also making headlines, looking to trade star receiver Davante Adams before the new league year. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Jets are fielding offers but may release Adams if they cannot secure a favorable trade.

“Adams has a high cap hit, and the Jets are in a retooling phase,” Rapoport stated. “They may ultimately let him go if a trade doesn’t materialize.” Adams had a solid if not spectacular 2024 campaign, recording 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns.

Free agency opens officially on March 12, right after teams designate franchise players on March 4. The league enters into a negotiation window from March 10 to 12, allowing teams to contact the agents of unrestricted free agents.

As the pivotal dates draw nearer, the Steelers, among others, will need to finalize their strategies for free agency, including what to do with Wilson and how to build a competitive roster leading into the 2025 season.
