Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Lineman Larry Ogunjobi

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Pittsburgh Steelers have released defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi after a three-year tenure, a decision that was largely anticipated as the team prepares for upcoming roster adjustments.

The move comes ahead of an impending roster bonus due in March, leading many to expect the Steelers would part ways with Ogunjobi before incurring the cost. During his time with the team, Ogunjobi appeared in 48 games and made 45 starts, accumulating 132 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and six sacks, though his production was seen as insufficient relative to his contracts.

Ogunjobi was the first veteran free agent signed by Steelers general manager Omar Khan when he took the helm in May 2022. He initially inked a one-year, $8 million contract with Pittsburgh after a proposed long-term deal with the Chicago Bears fell through due to health concerns. In his first year with the team, he started 16 games and posted 48 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

By March 2023, he received an extension and continued to play a pivotal role as the starting left defensive end and sub-package rusher, amassing three sacks during the 2023 season. However, Ogunjobi’s production declined significantly in 2024 as he lost playing time to second-year defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, finishing with only 1.5 sacks and seven quarterback hits over 15 games.

Struggling with lower-body injuries, Ogunjobi’s availability was inconsistent, as he often played through pain. His performance fluctuated, showcasing moments of strong play followed by extended lulls. Notably, his 2024 season started positively but tapered off dramatically, as he managed just one quarterback hit and no sacks over the final nine games of the season, including a playoff loss. Additionally, he missed Weeks 15 and 16 due to a groin injury.

Off the field, Ogunjobi was recognized as a strong teammate and an asset to the community, notably serving as the Steelers’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2024, although he ultimately lost to Arik Armstead of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With Ogunjobi’s departure, the Steelers are looking to strengthen their defensive line, which ranks among their most pressing needs. The team is expected to focus intently on the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, which features a robust class of interior linemen, potentially including standout prospects such as Walter Nolen from Ole Miss, Derrick Harmon from Oregon, Tyleik Williams from Ohio State, Deone Walker from Kentucky, and Kenneth Grant from Michigan.

Owner Art Rooney II acknowledged the necessity for fresh talent in the defensive front, stating that the team needs to incorporate “young blood” to improve performance. In addition to exploring draft options, the Steelers may also seek to fill Ogunjobi’s position through veteran acquisitions in free agency.
