PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers released outside linebacker Preston Smith on Friday, a move designed to enhance their financial flexibility and create over $13 million in cap space for the 2025 season.

Smith, 33, was acquired from the Green Bay Packers at the trade deadline in November 2024 for a seventh-round pick in 2025. Although he joined Pittsburgh as a notable edge rusher, Smith was mostly utilized in a reserve role, starting behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.

During his time with the Steelers, Smith recorded just two sacks and one fumble recovery, along with 13 combined tackles over eight games. His limited impact culminated in him being inactive for two of the final three games of the season, including the team’s playoff loss.

Originally a second-round draft pick in 2015, Smith has tallied 70.5 career sacks while playing for the Washington Football Team, Green Bay Packers, and the Steelers. Prior to his trade, he had recorded eight sacks in the 2023 season and achieved a career-high 12 sacks during the 2019 season.

After acquiring him, Smith expressed a desire to compete in a 3-4 defensive scheme, stating, “Just being back in the system is like riding your favorite bike again.” However, his tenure in Pittsburgh did not meet expectations.

Now a free agent, Smith will have an opportunity to explore new teams as the free agency period opens on March 12, 2025. His previous performance may still attract interest, given his experience and statistics over recent years.

The Steelers, following Smith’s departure, will now focus on establishing their pass-rushing corps ahead of the upcoming season. With T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith returning, along with backup Nick Herbig, the team has solid foundations to build upon as they search for a new addition to fill Smith’s role.
