Steelers Release Wide Receiver Scotty Miller Ahead of Playoffs
The Pittsburgh Steelers released wide receiver Scotty Miller from their active roster on Thursday, creating an open spot on their 53-man roster ahead of the NFL playoffs. Miller, who signed a one-year contract with the team during the offseason, appeared in 13 games this season, starting one, and recorded five receptions for 69 yards.
Miller, a six-year NFL veteran, has played in 80 career games, amassing 90 receptions for 1,154 yards and six touchdowns. His release comes as the Steelers prepare for the Wild Card round, with the team’s wide receiver corps fully healthy, including George Pickens, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, Ben Skowronek, and Mike Williams.
The move is believed to be aimed at making room for offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, who is currently on injured reserve but designated to return. Anderson, who was a full participant in Thursday’s practice, is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game due to a groin injury. With offensive guard Mason McCormick also questionable, the Steelers may need additional depth on their offensive line.
Miller’s release does not necessarily mark the end of his time with the Steelers. The 26-year-old receiver previously played under Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith during their time together with the Atlanta Falcons. Miller has shown flashes of potential this season, including a critical fourth-quarter play as the team’s emergency holder in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite the release, the Steelers enter the playoffs with just five wide receivers on their roster, raising questions about their depth at the position. The team’s decision reflects a strategic focus on bolstering their offensive line as they prepare for postseason competition.
