Steelers Running Back Free Agency Nfl 2025

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring options for a new running back as free agency kicks off. The team is looking to fill the void left by Najee Harris, who recently signed a one-year $9.25 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

As several strong running back candidates become available during the legal tampering period, experts are speculating on potential targets for the Steelers. Among the notable names are Nick Chubb, J.K. Dobbins, and Rico Dowdle, each offering unique attributes that could enhance Pittsburgh’s rushing game.

“Chubb provides the power that the Steelers will miss in Harris,” said an NFL analyst. “While fans may hesitate at the thought of signing a Cleveland player, it worked out well for Pittsburgh in the past with Joe Haden.”

Dobbins is another noteworthy candidate, offering explosiveness and the ability to score on any given touch. Despite past injury concerns, his performance in the Chargers’ backfield has generated interest in his potential fit with the Steelers.

“When healthy, Dobbins has shown he can be a game-changer,” the analyst added. “His ability to pair with Jaylen Warren in Pittsburgh could create a formidable rushing attack.”

Furthermore, there’s Rico Dowdle, who demonstrated his capacity as a lead running back for the Cowboys in 2024, accumulating over 1,000 rushing yards. Dowdle averaged 4.6 yards per carry and may be the most cost-effective option among those listed.

“With a solid 2024 season behind him, Dowdle could be a valuable addition for the Steelers,” the analyst noted. “He’s proven he can handle a substantial workload and perform well.”

The free agent running back market is buzzing with talent, including Aaron Jones and Javonte Williams, both of whom may attract attention from teams looking to bolster their backfields. The upcoming rookie class, featuring top college athletes, could further complicate the search for experienced running backs.

On March 12, the landscape will shift as free agency opens, providing a clearer picture of where these running backs may land. The Steelers, along with teams like the Raiders and Bears, are anticipated to make strategic moves as they refine their rosters for the upcoming season.
