Steelers Set to Choose Between Wilson and Fields as Starting Quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their training camp and the big question on everyone’s mind is who will be their starting quarterback: Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Coach Mike Tomlin described Wilson’s experience as giving him an advantage, but Fields is eager to prove himself during the preseason.

Wilson, who is 35, missed some time early in camp due to a calf injury, but Tomlin reassured fans that the starting lineup remains unchanged. Last season, the Steelers struggled with their quarterback play, managing only 13 passing touchdowns throughout 17 games, leading to a complete overhaul of their QB roster.

Pittsburgh had a tough year with quarterbacks like Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph all stepping in and out of the role. Despite the challenges, the Steelers still managed to squeeze into the playoffs last season at 10-7.

Interesting enough, the Steelers acquired Wilson at a low cost after the Seattle Seahawks agreed to pay him $39 million to not play for them, allowing him to sign with Pittsburgh for just over a million. Fields, who has been a starter for three years with the Chicago Bears, was also traded to the Steelers for a conditional draft pick, leaving Pittsburgh with opportunities for growth without breaking the bank.

Both quarterbacks face the challenge of stepping into a position where expectations are high. If either one leads the Steelers back to the playoffs, their current salaries are sure to see a significant increase. Wilson’s experience shines with 188 career starts and a Super Bowl championship win, while Fields brings a unique running ability, having gained over 2,000 rushing yards in three years.

The Steelers’ coaching staff is working hard to improve the offense after last season’s disappointing performance. The team hopes that former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith will bring new energy and a solid game plan.

While Wilson is seen as the favorite to secure the starting job, Fields is ready to step up and show what he can do. Both players have a friendly relationship and Wilson has taken on a mentorship role, sharing his knowledge with Fields.

General Manager Omar Khan praised Wilson for his leadership qualities, describing him as a hardworking and genuine person. The team is optimistic about what Wilson brings to the table not just as a player but as a teammate.

As training progresses, eyes will be on both quarterbacks to see who emerges as the clear choice for Week 1. The preseason will be crucial for Fields to make his case as the future quarterback of the Steelers.
