Esezi Otomewo Steelers Defensive Tackle

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers bolstered their defensive line on March 19 by signing defensive tackle Esezi Otomewo to a one-year contract. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Otomewo, a fifth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft, brings experience garnered over three seasons in the NFL. After appearing in five games during his rookie season, he spent the entirety of the 2023 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ practice squad before returning to game action in 2024.

In 2024, Otomewo played four games with the Jaguars, starting in two and recording four tackles, two quarterback hits, and half a sack. His standout performance came against the Chicago Bears, where he registered two tackles and a quarterback hit.

“I’m excited to join the Steelers and contribute to their defensive efforts,” Otomewo said in a statement. “Pittsburgh has a strong tradition, and I look forward to working alongside great players like Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton.”

Over the course of his NFL career, Otomewo has logged nine games, making two starts and accumulating nine tackles — three solo stops — along with a tackle for a loss, four quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Otomewo played his college football at the University of Minnesota, participating in 46 games and recording 81 tackles, with 50 being solo. He had an impressive collegiate career with 13.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks, earning him an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection in 2021.

“Adding Esezi to our roster is part of our commitment to strengthening the defense,” said Steelers General Manager Omar Khan. “His versatility and experience will be valuable as we move forward.”

The Steelers are looking to enhance their defensive depth as they prepare for the upcoming season, also recently signing Daniel Ekuale and re-signing defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk. With the competition ramping up, Otomewo’s addition could be pivotal in filling any gaps in their lineup.

Otomewo’s career statistics highlight a player poised for growth, as he transitions from his early career struggles to potentially finding consistent play time with the Steelers. His physical attributes are also promising; standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 282 pounds, he showcased speed and agility at his pro day, running a 5.01 40-yard dash with a 35.5-inch vertical jump.

As the Steelers prepare for the NFL Draft, analysts speculate that they may seek more reinforcements for the defensive line alongside established players such as Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton. Potential early-round options could include Derrick Harmon from Oregon and Kenneth Grant from Michigan.
