Steelers Sign Iowa Running Back Kaleb Johnson to Four-Year Deal

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed running back Kaleb Johnson, their third-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, to a four-year contract. Johnson, selected with the 83rd overall pick, played college football at the University of Iowa.
Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith expressed excitement about Johnson’s potential impact on the team. “He’s a really explosive running back that we spent some time with on a 30 visit here,” Smith said. “He is one of the most instinctive backs I’ve watched in years.”
Smith highlighted Johnson’s ability to fit into various run schemes, praising his performance in the fourth quarter, where he averaged over five yards per carry. “We think he’s a great culture fit. Obviously extremely fired up to get Kaleb in here,” Smith added.
During his college career, Johnson appeared in 35 games, starting 22, and recorded 2,779 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns. He also made 29 receptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson’s final season was prolific as he rushed for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns, setting personal career highs.
Now settling into his new role with the Steelers, Johnson expressed eagerness to contribute. “I can’t wait to work. I am excited right now,” he stated.
Johnson is one of three former Iowa Hawkeyes recently acquired by the Steelers, highlighting the team’s commitment to bringing fresh talent to its roster. As minicamp begins, Johnson is focused on competing and learning the playbook to prepare for the upcoming season.
