CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has been appointed assistant general manager of the basketball programs at Davidson College, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first active player in major U.S. professional sports to accept an administrative position with an NCAA team, according to ESPN‘s Shams Charania.

Curry, who played for the Davidson Wildcats from 2006 to 2009, will leverage his extensive college and professional experience to provide guidance to both men’s and women’s teams. He will collaborate closely with general manager Austin Buntz, a former member of Under Armour’s global sports marketing team.

For nearly two decades, Davidson College basketball has been associated with Curry’s remarkable journey, which includes setting the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers and winning two Southern Conference Player of the Year awards. He averaged 28.6 points per game during the 2008-09 season, leading all of Division I basketball.

In a significant boost for the programs, Curry, along with his wife Ayesha and long-time Davidson supporters, plans to establish an eight-figure fund to enhance both men’s and women’s teams.

“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry said in a statement from the school. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni, and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high-character student-athletes to have that same experience.”

Curry’s tenure at Davidson is noted for flourishing during the 2008 NCAA Tournament, where he propelled the team to the Elite Eight, averaging 32 points per game and scoring 40 points in a first-round upset of Gonzaga.

Now a seasoned NBA veteran in his 16th season, Curry also recently returned to Davidson to complete his degree in sociology and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2022. He is the only player to have his jersey number retired by Davidson.

The Wildcats, currently under the direction of head coach Matt McKillop, have faced challenges recently, including their first losing season since 2001 during the 2023-24 year. They ended the season with a 16-15 record and a 6-12 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Curry’s new role comes at a crucial time, as he aims to help rejuvenate the program’s competitive edge and maintain the legacy he established during his college years.

In a similar move, former NFL quarterback Andrew Luck accepted a general manager position at his alma mater last year, highlighting a trend of professional athletes returning to support their collegiate programs.
