Sterling Shepard Revives Career with Bucs Amidst Injuries

Tampa, FL — Sterling Shepard, a veteran wide receiver, is making a significant impact on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season, showcasing his skills after battling injuries in recent years. The 2016 second-round pick previously struggled with playing time due to serious injuries, appearing in only 25 games for the New York Giants from 2021 to 2023.
Shepard signed with the Bucs during the offseason, accepting a role that many thought might lead him toward retirement. However, his energy and experience have been crucial for the team, especially as injuries struck the wide receiver group. Offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard recently praised Shepard’s infectious energy and contributions on the field.
“He brings juice anytime he makes a play,” Grizzard said. “He’s always amped up. Having him around has been really cool, especially on game day.”
In his first season with the Bucs, Shepard has stepped up significantly. In just six games, he has recorded 19 receptions for 242 yards and a touchdown, nearing his totals from last season. His ability to mentor younger receivers and contribute to the offense has not gone unnoticed.
“’Shep’ has been just a great addition to the room,” wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon stated. “He embodies everything you want in a guy and brings energy on and off the field.”
As the Buccaneers prepare to face the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Shepard’s veteran presence will be key. Despite entering the year as the fifth option on the depth chart, he is now positioned as a primary target for quarterback Baker Mayfield, whose own performance has propelled the team to a 5-1 record this season.
Shepard expressed confidence about the potential of the Bucs’ receiving corps, stating, “We’re waiting on Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin Jr.] to get back, and once we mix them in, it’s dangerous.”
