Steve Ballmer Donates $15M to Aid Wildfire Victims in Los Angeles
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and his wife, Connie, have pledged an initial $15 million in emergency funding to support communities affected by the deadly wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles region. The donation, announced Thursday by The Ballmer Group, aims to address immediate needs such as food, shelter, and first responder support.
“We love L.A. and are committed to supporting the communities affected by the devastating wildfires,” the couple said in a statement. They emphasized the importance of aiding the historic, racially diverse community of Altadena, which has been particularly hard-hit by the disaster.
The Ballmer Group’s donation will be distributed across four wildfire relief funds, two emergency shelters, two food and basic needs organizations, two first responder groups, and nine organizations supporting students and families. Additionally, the group is organizing FireAid, a benefit concert scheduled for Jan. 30 at Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum, both venues owned by Ballmer.
“We understand there will be a long road to recovery for the LA region and remain committed to supporting the community,” the Ballmers added. The couple, who have deep ties to the area, have been active in philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and economic mobility.
The wildfires, which have caused widespread destruction and displacement, have prompted an outpouring of support from local and national organizations. The Ballmer Group’s contribution is among the largest private donations to date, underscoring the urgency of the crisis.
Meanwhile, the NCAA Division I men’s basketball oversight committee approved a rule change allowing teams to play two exhibitions against other four-year schools without requiring a waiver. The new rule, effective for the 2025-26 season, also removes the mandate that proceeds from such games be donated to charity, giving schools more flexibility in revenue distribution.
In college basketball action, Oakland‘s women’s team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-72 overtime victory over Milwaukee. Macy Smith led the way with a career-high 25 points, while Maddy Skorupski contributed 14 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation.
As the Los Angeles region begins the long process of recovery, the Ballmers’ donation and ongoing efforts highlight the critical role of private philanthropy in disaster response and community rebuilding.
