Stina Blackstenius Leads Arsenal to Champions League Victory Over Barcelona

LISBON, Portugal — Arsenal‘s women’s football team claimed the Champions League title on Saturday night, defeating Barcelona 1-0 in a thrilling final. Swedish forward Stina Blackstenius emerged as the hero with a decisive goal in the 75th minute.
Arsenal faced Barcelona, who were seeking their third consecutive Champions League win. Blackstenius, who was substituted in during the 67th minute, finished a pinpoint pass from Bethany Mead inside the penalty area, placing the ball into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Cata Coll.
“What a goal she scores; it’s very beautiful,” said SVT Sports expert Hanna Marklund after the match. Blackstenius’ goal not only clinched the victory for Arsenal, but also marked a historic moment as the team celebrated its second Women’s Champions League title, the first since 2007.
The final, held at Estádio José Alvalade, attracted 38,356 fans and featured a tightly contested match. Barcelona struggled to break through Arsenal’s strong defense, despite dominating possession early on. Fridolina Rolfö, who played as a left-back for Barcelona, noted the pressure the team felt from Arsenal’s tactical play.
Rolfö praised her teammate Aitana Bonmati, describing her effort in the buildup to the final. “She works extremely hard, and it’s likely what sets her apart from other world-class players,” Rolfö said.
While Arsenal’s Rosa Kafaji missed the match due to injury, the bench saw three other Swedish players, including Blackstenius. With the win, Arsenal answered the call for a revitalized approach in women’s football, showcasing raw determination and skill throughout the tournament.
The atmosphere post-match was one of ecstatic celebration for Arsenal, as players embraced on the field, reflecting both joy and disbelief. “Nobody thought we would achieve this after being seen as underdogs,” said a jubilant Blackstenius after the game. The final confirmed Arsenal’s place in women’s football history.
