Several Sudbury area hockey players from the 2008 birth year showcased their talents in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, making significant impacts in the draft.

Mateo Beites, the goaltender hailing from Azilda, had a standout season with the Barrie Junior Colts U16 AAA squad and was drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in the fifth round, 86th overall. Beites’ journey was especially poignant as he overcame the loss of his father, Miguel, last summer and dedicated his draft selection to his father’s memory.

Kohyn Eshkawkogan, a defenceman from the North York Rangers and a member of M’Chigeeng First Nation, was selected in the first round, 21st overall, by the Ottawa 67’s. Eshkawkogan’s impressive performance throughout the season saw him total 65 points in 76 games and play a key role in helping the team reach the final of the OHL Cup showcase.

Another notable player, Dawson Morris from the Wolves U16 AAA team, was drafted in the seventh round by the Guelph Storm. Morris, a skilled defenceman, served as team captain and recorded 22 points in 33 games during the season.

Mason Walker, a top scorer for the U16 Wolves and the reigning NOHA Player of the Year, was ecstatic to be chosen by his hometown team, the Sudbury Wolves, in the eighth round. Walker’s impressive season included 33 goals and 30 assists in just 36 games.

These talented players, along with several others from the region, have demonstrated their potential and are eager to continue their development as they pursue their dreams of playing in the OHL.
