Sunny Hostin’s Husband Faces $459M Insurance Fraud Lawsuit
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Sunny Hostin, co-host of ABC’s “The View,” is facing personal turmoil as her husband, Dr. Emmanuel Hostin, has been named in a $459 million insurance fraud lawsuit. The orthopedic surgeon and his practice, Hostin Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, are among more than 180 defendants in a federal RICO case filed in the Eastern District of New York last month.
The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Hostin and other defendants received kickbacks for performing surgeries and fraudulently billed American Transit Insurance Company, which provides coverage for Uber, Lyft, and taxi drivers. The complaint claims Dr. Hostin was given an “investment” interest in the Empire State Ambulatory Surgery Center in exchange for patient referrals.
Dr. Hostin’s attorney, Daniel Thwaites, dismissed the allegations as a “blanket, scattershot, meritless lawsuit by a near-bankrupt insurance carrier.” He accused American Transit of using the lawsuit to intimidate doctors and avoid paying legitimate claims.
Sunny Hostin, who has not publicly addressed the lawsuit, has continued her role on “The View,” where she frequently comments on legal and ethical issues. Her silence on the matter has drawn criticism from some quarters, with former ABC insiders calling it “hypocritical.”
Mark Geragos, a high-profile attorney representing the Hostin family, has threatened to countersue American Transit for $5 million, alleging defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In a letter to the insurance company, Geragos accused them of waging a “public media smear campaign” to exploit Sunny Hostin’s celebrity status.
American Transit’s attorney, William Natbony, defended the lawsuit, stating it was filed to combat “no-fault fraud,” which he described as rampant in New York. He denied any improper conduct by the company or its counsel.
Legal experts predict the case could drag on for years, with potential implications for Dr. Hostin’s medical practice and reputation. Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin’s role on “The View” appears unaffected, as ABC News has not commented on the lawsuit.
