Suns Acquire Nick Richards to Boost Defense and Rebounding
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Phoenix Suns addressed a critical need for size and defense by acquiring center Nick Richards in a trade on Wednesday. The move comes as the Suns aim to improve their performance on the offensive glass and bolster their frontcourt depth.
Richards, a former Charlotte Hornet, is averaging 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game this season while shooting 56.1% from the field. His athleticism, rebounding, and shot-blocking abilities are expected to provide immediate support for the Suns, who have struggled in recent games.
Head coach Mike Budenholzer expressed enthusiasm about the addition. “We’re excited about adding Nick and what he can bring to our team,” Budenholzer said. “His size, athleticism, and ability to impact the game defensively around the rim and on the boards will be valuable.”
Richards is under contract for next season at a non-guaranteed $5 million, making him a cost-effective addition for the Suns. He is expected to join the team in Detroit on Friday and could make his debut Saturday against the Pistons.
The trade reflects the Suns’ commitment to addressing weaknesses and building a more balanced roster as they push for playoff contention. Richards’ ability to set screens and contribute on both ends of the court aligns with the team’s strategic goals.
