Suns Stage Incredible Comeback to Defeat Kings in Thrilling Finish
The Phoenix Suns staged an incredible comeback to defeat the Sacramento Kings in a thrilling finish on Tuesday night. The Suns found themselves trailing by 17 points with just eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, they mounted a remarkable 23-4 run to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
In an impressive display of shooting, the Suns’ star player, Durant, tied a franchise record by sinking nine 3-pointers, ultimately scoring 29 points. He played a pivotal role in the team’s comeback, explaining afterwards that everything happened so quickly that it felt like a blur.
Phoenix’s success in turning the game around hinged on disrupting the Kings’ free-flowing offense. By applying pressure and switching screens, the Suns were able to force the Kings into playing one-on-one, which yielded positive results.
This comeback marks a significant achievement for the Suns, as they become only the second team in the past 25 seasons to overcome a deficit of 20 or more points in the final 8 minutes of the fourth quarter. The only other team to accomplish this feat was the Sacramento Kings themselves against the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2020.
Alongside Durant’s exceptional performance, other key contributors for the Suns included point guard who recorded 16 points and 11 assists, as well as who scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. This collective effort, with solid contributions from the bench, propelled the Suns to victory.
While the Kings held a commanding 22-point lead with 8:22 remaining, Durant ignited the Suns’ resurgence with clutch 3-pointers. Later on, sank back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 115. The Suns continued to battle mentally, staying in the fight despite moments of frustration.
Suns coach Frank Vogel praised his team’s resilience and credited their success to embracing a small lineup featuring five 3-point shooters. He also highlighted the pivotal contributions from Eric, who stepped up off the bench, hitting crucial 3-point shots.
Durant’s clutch free throws with 1.8 seconds left on the clock gave the Suns a narrow 117-115 lead. The Kings’ top scorer, Sabonis, managed to tie the game briefly with a jumper, but then fouled Durant on a long jumper attempt. After Durant calmly sank both free throws, the Kings’ last-second shot fell short, securing the victory for the Suns.
Despite a valiant effort for the majority of the game, the Kings were left disappointed by the defeat. Kings coach Mike Brown lamented their struggles in the final six minutes, with tough shots at the rim, lack of ball movement, and stagnation on offense. The Kings’ recent losing streak leaves them searching for answers and hoping to learn from this tough loss.
