Super Bowl Lvii Blackout Lights Out

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The unexpected blackout during Super Bowl LVII remains etched in the memories of sports fans worldwide. On February 3, 2013, the lights went out at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during a pivotal moment of the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, altering the course of the championship and sparking widespread discussion.

Tracy Wolfson, a veteran sports reporter for CBS, was present at the game and had an intriguing experience leading up to this unexpected event. Earlier this week, she recounted this story in an exclusive interview facilitated by Wendy’s, the official hamburger sponsor of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

“It was a surreal moment,” Wolfson said reflecting on the blackout. “Everyone remembers where they were when it happened. I remember the conversations I had before the game.” Wolfson was not yet the sideline reporter for the NFL, and while working with CBS for the coverage, she was jokingly told by production staff that she would only get to report from the field if the lights went out.

“They joked with me about not getting in unless the lights went out,” she recalled. “It’s kind of wild to think that someone predicted it. No one could have imagined it would actually happen.”

The blackout lasted 34 minutes, during which time Wolfson was able to contribute critical updates from the sidelines, showcasing her adaptability and the unpredictable nature of live sports coverage.

As the tournament unfolds, Wolfson continues to play a significant role, serving as the court-side reporter for this year’s Final Four. Her duties include covering the action in San Antonio, Texas, as college basketball teams compete for the national title.

Wendy’s initiative around March Madness also aims to satisfy spectators’ appetites, offering deals like a $1 Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and $1 Double Stack™ with additional purchase, keeping fans fueled for an exciting tournament season.

Thanks to Tracy Wolfson for sharing her reflections on one of the most unforgettable moments in Super Bowl history, and to Wendy’s for their ongoing support during March Madness.
