Super Eagles Coach José Peseiro Aims to Clinch Group A Top Spot in AFCON

The Super Eagles of Nigeria recently secured a vital victory against the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations host, Côte d’Ivoire, remaining on track in the tournament. Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has reaffirmed the team’s objective of topping Group A in the competition, just less than 24 hours before their critical group match.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria put up an impressive performance against Ivory Coast, earning them four points and placing them in second position in the Group A standings. While some people in the Nigerian football community anticipate underestimating or settling for a draw against bottom-placed Guinea-Bissau, Peseiro remains confident in securing a victory in the upcoming match.

During a press conference witnessed by Soccernet.ng, Peseiro expressed the team’s determination to obtain a win at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium. He stated, ‘We want to approach our final group match with utmost seriousness. We have achieved our target against Ivory Coast, and our next plan is to defeat Guinea-Bissau. Our focus now is on Guinea-Bissau, and we aim to secure the top position in the group. To achieve that, we need to improve in our next match.’

Though acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Peseiro emphasized that Guinea-Bissau is a formidable team with skilled players. Despite their recent defeats, he cautioned against underestimating them and stressed the need for the Super Eagles to demonstrate responsibility and deliver a superior performance on the field.

Peseiro added, ‘Bissau is a good team with quality players. We cannot underestimate them. They play good football and can beat any team. However, we recognize our responsibility, and that must be evident on the field of play through our improved performance.’

The Super Eagles are set to face Guinea-Bissau tomorrow, aiming to secure all three points for a smooth advancement from the group.
