Supercross Heats Up in San Diego: Sexton Leads Qualifying
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The 2025 Supercross season continued its high-octane momentum at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, with Chase Sexton setting the fastest qualifying time in the 450SX class. The event, held under perfect 61-degree weather, drew thousands of fans eager to see top riders battle it out on a challenging track.
Sexton, riding for Honda HRC, clocked a blistering 52.861-second lap in the final qualifying session, narrowly edging out Eli Tomac and Jett Lawrence, who both recorded identical times of 52.947 seconds. “It felt great out there,” Sexton said after the session. “The track is technical, but I found a rhythm that worked for me.”
In the 250SX West class, Julien Beaumer stole the show with a stunning 53.167-second lap, narrowly beating Haiden Deegan, who posted a 53.355. Beaumer, who also led qualifying last week in Anaheim, showcased his consistency and speed. “I’m feeling confident heading into the main event,” Beaumer said. “The track is tough, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
The San Diego track, known for its technical layout, featured multiple rhythm sections, a sand section, and a quad jump that tested riders’ skills. Early reports from practice sessions indicated the dirt was tacky and soft, leading to deep ruts in the corners. Despite the challenging conditions, riders like Justin Hill and Ken Roczen appeared comfortable, with Hill even attempting daring whips and wheelies during press day.
The 450SX class saw intense competition, with Tomac and Lawrence trading fast laps throughout qualifying. Tomac, a fan favorite, expressed optimism about his performance. “The bike feels good, and I’m in a solid position for the main event,” he said. Lawrence, meanwhile, remained focused on improving his lines. “I’m still learning this track, but I’m confident we can make adjustments,” he noted.
In the 250SX West class, Beaumer and Deegan’s rivalry took center stage. Deegan, who struggled with a poor start last week in Anaheim, showed significant improvement, finishing second in qualifying. “I’m here to win,” Deegan said. “If I get a good start, I know I can make it happen.”
As the sun set over Snapdragon Stadium, anticipation built for the evening’s main events. Fans packed the stands, eager to see if Sexton could maintain his qualifying dominance and if Beaumer could secure back-to-back victories. With the track holding up well and temperatures ideal, the stage was set for an unforgettable night of racing.
