DOHA, Qatar — Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are not just top contenders on the WTA Tour; they are building a rivalry that, according to Swiatek, has been essential to the sport’s appeal. As the only two women to have reached the pinnacle of the WTA Rankings since Ashleigh Barty‘s retirement in 2022, Swiatek and Sabalenka have consistently demonstrated their dominance on the court.
Swiatek, who has held the No. 1 ranking for 125 weeks—including an impressive 75-week consecutive streak—currently ranks second with 8,770 points. Meanwhile, Sabalenka, who claimed the top spot last October, follows closely behind with 8,956 points as of February 11, 2025.
“I think we are something the WTA has been kind of missing for a while because we have this great rivalry, and the fans are excited every time they see both of us,” Swiatek said, highlighting the importance of their competitive dynamic. “It’s nice to have such a great athlete as an opponent.”
The two players have also found common ground beyond their fierce competition. With several off-court interactions and even joint training sessions, their relationship has evolved over recent months.
Sabalenka, who has also reached new heights in her performance with the support of her coaching team, noted, “I think Aryna’s team is one of the most professional I’ve seen on tour. They’re taking care of everything, similar to me.”
Both players have achieved significant success in Grand Slam events and have dominated recent tournaments, further fueling their rivalry. Swiatek has four Grand Slam titles, while Sabalenka has secured three.
The Qatar Open has become a significant stage for their rivalry, with Swiatek being the only woman to win the tournament three times since its inception in 2001. The event is currently classified as a WTA 1000 and is held at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. In addition to Swiatek’s accomplishments, noted champions of the tournament include Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, each boasting multiple titles.
As the 2025 WTA season unfolds, Swiatek and Sabalenka are set to continue pushing the boundaries, not only competing against each other but also contributing to the overall growth of women’s tennis.
