The Sydney Marathon has achieved a significant milestone as it reaches a record capacity of 24,000 runners for the 2024 edition, making it the largest field ever in Australia‘s enduring classic.

Originating from the 2000 Olympic Games, the Sydney Marathon is in the midst of a transformation process aiming to secure a spot among the elite global series of marathons known as the World Marathon Majors, alongside renowned races like the ones in Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, and New York, starting from 2025.

Race director Wayne Larden expressed his enthusiasm in a news release, stating, ‘This is a momentous year for the Sydney Marathon as we aim to become the next World Marathon Major.’

Last year’s event in the harbour city drew a record-breaking 17,000 runners and over 100,000 spectators, showcasing the growing interest and passion for long-distance running in Australia.

However, Sydney still has ground to cover to match the level of fervor seen in established races like the one in London, which recently received a staggering 840,318 applications for the ballot to participate in the 2025 event.

The upcoming Sydney Marathon, set to take place on a new route on the morning of September 15, promises to deliver a world-class experience, welcoming a diverse array of runners and spectators locally, nationally, and internationally to be a part of history.
