Luke Parker, a veteran player for the Sydney Swans, has requested a trade to North Melbourne, marking the end of his 14-year tenure with the Swans. This announcement comes shortly after the Swans’ recent Grand Final defeat to Brisbane. The 31-year-old player officially expressed his desire to transfer to the Kangaroos during his exit meeting on Wednesday.

Over the course of his career, Parker has become one of the most distinguished players for the Sydney club. Selected with pick No.40 in the 2010 draft, he has played 293 games, earning numerous accolades including being part of the 2012 premiership team, a three-time club champion, and co-captain from 2019 to 2023. Additionally, Parker has been awarded the Brett Kirk Medal on five occasions for his exceptional performances in the Sydney Derby.

“Coming to Sydney as a 19-year-old completely changed my life. Sydney became my home, I met my wife Kate here and the Swans became our family,” Parker shared. “The decision to part ways with the club after 14 years has been an extremely difficult choice, one I thought I’d never have to make,” Parker added, noting the irreplaceable memories and bonds formed with teammates and fans during his time with the club.

Sydney Swans coach John Longmire praised Parker’s contributions to the team, stating, “‘Parks’ has been an absolute pleasure to coach since he walked into this club all those years ago. He has been one of the hardest and most competitive players we’ve had and his resilience and ability to keep backing up, time after time, is something I always admired.”

Parker’s transfer request is set against the backdrop of the 2024 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, which opens on October 7. Despite a recent season marked by injury and limited appearances, including participation in the Grand Final where he scored three goals, Parker remains a contracted player with the Swans until the end of 2025, necessitating a trade agreement with North Melbourne.
