Taco Bell’s Double Decker Taco Makes a Limited Return
Taco Bell has reintroduced the Double Decker Taco for a brief stint due to popular customer demand. From October 10, customers can enjoy this two-layered taco at participating locations nationwide, but only until October 30. The return of this product highlights the significant influence of the brand’s fan base on its menu offerings.
Initially launched as a limited-time item in 1995, the Double Decker Taco became a permanent feature of Taco Bell’s menu in 2006. This culinary creation is a unique combination of a flour tortilla filled with refried beans encasing a crunchy taco shell, which contains seasoned beef, lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese. A deluxe version, the Double Decker Taco Supreme, adds diced tomatoes and reduced-fat sour cream to the mix.
Joseph Lamour, a food enthusiast from Washington, D.C., expressed his appreciation for the Double Decker Taco, highlighting its unique ability to combine contrasting ingredients into a culinary masterpiece. Taco Bell fans have been vocal on social media, with one user urging the company to “bring back the Double Decker Taco,” reflecting the persistent demand for its return.
This year, the Double Decker Taco is priced at $2, which is a dollar cheaper than its previous year’s price. The Double Decker Taco Supreme is available for $2.69, also reflecting a dollar reduction in price compared to last year. Taco Bell’s decision to reinstate the taco comes as part of a broader strategy to reintroduce popular items from its past.
In 2022, Taco Bell organized an online poll allowing customers to vote for the return of a discontinued item. Over 760,000 votes were cast, with the Enchirito beating the Double Decker Taco by securing 62 percent of the votes. Despite losing the poll, fans continued their campaign, leading to the taco’s temporary revival late last year.
Besides the Double Decker Taco, the Tex-Mex chain is testing other nostalgic menu items such as the Tostada, Green Burrito, Meximelt, Beef Gordita Supreme, and Caramel Apple Empanada, which could potentially see nationwide availability if testing is successful.
Despite its limited availability, fans can look forward to trying the Double Decker Taco until October 30. For those who miss out, there are many online recipes available that replicate the taco, earning acclaim from users who extol its taste and ease of preparation.
