No. 5 Tar Heels Face Stony Brook in Weekend Series Showdown

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The North Carolina Tar Heels are set to conclude their demanding stretch of eight games in nine days with a weekend series against the Stony Brook Seawolves at Boshamer Stadium, starting on February 28, 2025. This matchup represents the 13th through 15th games between the two programs, with Carolina looking to continue their momentum after sweeping Stony Brook in their last three encounters.
The Tar Heels, currently ranked fifth nationally and boasting a record of 9-0, have made an impressive start to the season. This marks UNC’s best opening since 2013 when they won 16 consecutive games. Head coach at UNC, who is in his fifth season, has led the team to significant victories, including a recent sweep over in-state rival East Carolina.
In their most recent match, the Tar Heels secured a powerful 15-4 win over NC A&T, completing a clean sweep during a five-game stretch. “We are hitting our stride at the right time, and our bullpen has done an incredible job in high-pressure situations,” said the head coach.
The Tar Heels’ remarkable start included successful midweek matchups despite facing challenges; they gave up four runs in the third inning in both games but came back to score 20 unanswered runs. On the pitching front, the team has excelled, recording 17 strikeouts in their final game against NC A&T — the most since March 2023.
Leading the charge offensively is first baseman, who had a standout week with a .550 batting average, racking up 11 hits, eight RBIs, and eight runs scored. He achieved a personal milestone by hitting two home runs in a single game against VCU. His recent performance represents the best batting average and on-base percentage of any five-game stretch in his career.
Another freshman standout is , who made an immediate impact during the match against NC A&T, hitting three times with four RBIs and delivering a three-run home run. His performance makes him one of two freshmen to homer in their collegiate debut for the Tar Heels since 2011.
On the other side of the diamond, the Stony Brook Seawolves, currently 3-3, are led by head coach Matt Senk. The team began the year with three wins against Bethune-Cookman but suffered three losses against Florida Gulf Coast. Preseason All-America honoree Erik Paulsen has been a key player for Stony Brook, both as a hitter and a pitcher.
When the two teams faced off last March, the Tar Heels swept the series, with a thrilling walk-off victory in the first game. Carolina remains undefeated against the Seawolves in 12 previous matchups, with expectations high for continuing that streak.
With the series commencing Friday evening, fans can tune in to the games available through ACCNX and goHeels.com for audio coverage. Game times are set for 4 PM, 2 PM on Saturday, and 1 PM on Sunday. Coach will look to exploit their current winning ways while the Seawolves aim to flip the script on a historically tough matchup.
