Tar Heels Shut Out Pirates in Close Baseball Match

Greenville, N.C. — The East Carolina University baseball team fell to the University of North Carolina in a tightly contested match on February 22, 2025, suffering a 2-0 defeat at home.
The Pirates struggled to generate offense throughout the game, managing only four hits against a strong Tar Heels pitching staff. The victory for North Carolina (4-1) marked their first win against ECU (3-4) in the 2025 season.
North Carolina took an early lead in the second inning when junior outfielder Alex Johnson hit a two-run homer, driving in teammate Max Reed. ECU’s pitching held the Tar Heels scoreless for the remainder of the game, but they could not respond offensively.
“We had our chances, but we couldn’t capitalize when it mattered most,” said ECU head coach Cliff Godwin. “North Carolina executed their game plan, and we need to regroup and come out stronger in our next contest.”
The Pirates’ best opportunity to score came in the sixth inning, when they loaded the bases with two outs. However, they were unable to bring any runners home as Tar Heels pitcher Josh Miller struck out the final batter. ECU was disappointed by the outcome but praised their pitching performance.
“Our pitchers did a great job of keeping us in the game,” Godwin added. “It’s just one of those days when the ball didn’t bounce our way.”
The ECU Pirates will look to bounce back as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against the University of Texas at San Antonio on February 24, 2025.
