Joao Fonseca Tennis Match Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca triumphed over Britain’s Jacob Fearnley with a final score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in his debut match at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday. The 18-year-old’s victory marked a significant moment in his young career, showcasing his resilience after trailing by a break in the third set.

Fonseca, who received a wild-card entry into the tournament, began strongly, winning the first set with confidence. However, Fearnley rebounded powerfully in the second set, taking advantage of the windy conditions to level the match. After securing a 3-1 lead in the third, Fearnley’s momentum was halted as Fonseca rallied, securing five consecutive games to clinch the match.

“It’s a pleasure being here on center court at Indian Wells. It’s a dream,” said Fonseca, who is currently ranked No. 80 in the world. “Today was pretty difficult, very windy, and I got through so I’m very happy.”

The atmosphere was electrifying during the match, amplified by the presence of fervent Brazilian fans who supported Fonseca throughout the contest. “Everywhere I go, there are some Brazilians cheering for me,” he remarked.

Fonseca’s match was particularly notable as he overcame mental hurdles during the pivotal third set, demonstrating both skill and poise. “It was very windy, and I think it’s the biggest court I played on so far, so I’m just very excited about how I played today,” he commented.

Next for Fonseca is a match against the No. 13 seed, further heightening the anticipation surrounding his tournament run. “I was a break down in the third [set]; things were not very good for me, but I continued focusing on my game,” Fonseca added.

Fearnley, ranked No. 81, delivered a strong performance as well, particularly in the second set where he hit an impressive 23 forehand winners. However, critical errors in the decisive moments—such as double-faulting at crucial points—ultimately contributed to his defeat. After taking the second set, Fearnley initially seemed poised to win, but a string of unforced errors allowed Fonseca to regain control.

The match extended for approximately two hours, further highlighting the emotional and physical demands placed on both athletes. Fonseca concluded with 17 winners and 34 unforced errors, while Fearnley had a notable 29 winners but also 45 unforced errors by the end.

Notably, the BNP Paribas Open, often referred to as the “fifth Grand Slam,” is widely considered a key event on the ATP circuit, drawing a large audience and media attention.

Fonseca’s victory adds to the excitement surrounding his burgeoning career, which includes a recent title win in Buenos Aires and a notable upset against a top-10 player earlier this year at the Australian Open.

As he looks to advance, Fonseca’s performance at Indian Wells indicates he is a player to watch in the coming rounds.
