Alexandra Eala Miami Open Tennis Victory

MIAMI, Florida — Filipina tennis player Alexandra Eala stunned world No. 5 Madison Keys with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory in a third-round match at the Miami Open on March 24, 2025. This remarkable win marks Eala as the first player from the Philippines to defeat a Top 10 opponent in WTA history since rankings began in 1975.

Eala, who is currently ranked 140th globally, broke Keys’ serve six times throughout the match, showcasing her impressive tactical skills and resilience. The victory not only propels her to the next round but also makes her the first Filipina to secure a victory over a top-10 player since the rankings were introduced.

“I can’t wait to call my mom and dad,” Eala expressed jubilantly after her win. “I’m so super proud of what I was able to accomplish. It was definitely a big thing to take in and it fuels me more.” Eala emphasized the importance of staying focused as she prepares for her next match against No. 10 seed Paula Badosa.

Born in the Philippines, Eala began her tennis journey at age four, inspired by her grandfather and brother. At 13, she moved to Mallorca to train at the Rafael Nadal Academy, a decision she called pivotal for her development. “I jumped at the opportunity because I knew that I had to get out of the country eventually to improve,” she said.

With her recent success, Eala’s three wins at the Miami Open have now surpassed the total victories of all Filipina players combined since the tournament’s inception in the Open Era. Eala aims to inspire other young Filipino athletes, saying, “I want them to see my attitude and determination on the court from their homes, along with the results I’m achieving.”

In other matches, 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu advanced to the last 16 after her opponent, McCartney Kessler, retired due to injury. Raducanu dominated the match until Kessler had to withdraw, stating afterward, “I wish her a speedy recovery because she has been playing so well.” Raducanu will face Amanda Anisimova in her next match.

Meanwhile, with a historic win of his own, Novak Djokovic secured his 411th victory at ATP Masters 1000 events, breaking Rafael Nadal’s record. Djokovic defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-1, 7-6(1) and stated, “I’m honored to have another milestone. There’s always something on the line pretty much every time I play.” He now faces Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16 as he seeks to win a record-extending seventh Miami Open title.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Eala to see if she can continue her remarkable journey against Badosa. With her exceptional talent and determination, Alexandra Eala is indeed a player to watch in the coming rounds.
