Tennessee Quarterback Nico Iamaleava in Contract Negotiations Amid Transfer Portal Rumors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Volunteers starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava is engaged in contract negotiations with the university, raising speculation that he might enter the NCAA transfer portal, which opens April 16. The negotiations come on the heels of the Volunteers’ first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, placing significant expectations on the program as it prepares for the 2025 season.

Iamaleava, who is entering his second season as the Vols’ starter, is a pivotal figure for the team. He was ranked as a five-star prospect and the No. 2 quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class. His potential departure would represent a severe blow for Tennessee, which has already seen a significant number of roster changes due to portal movements.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the ongoing negotiations could determine Iamaleava’s future with the program. The quarterback’s current NIL deal, reportedly valued at $8 million, was among the largest in college football when he signed. Backup quarterback Jake Merklinger has impressed during the spring, which adds to the urgency for reconciling Iamaleava’s contract terms. While Iamaleava notched impressive stats last season, including 2,616 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, his performance towards the end of the year raised questions. In the College Football Playoff, he struggled, completing just 14 of 31 passes for 104 yards in a loss to Ohio State.

With losses in key positions — including running back Dylan Sampson and wide receivers Bru McCoy and Dont’e Thornton Jr. — the Volunteers can ill afford to lose Iamaleava, who led the team to victories over top opponents, including Alabama and Florida, last fall.
