Tennessee Lady Volunteers Softball Game

KNOXVILLE, TN – May 24, 2025 – The Tennessee Lady Volunteers prevailed over the Nebraska Cornhuskers 3-2 in game two of the NCAA Softball Tournament Super Regional, setting up a decisive game three on Sunday with a spot in the Women’s College World Series at stake. Ace pitcher Karlyn Pickens, known for her formidable skills, played a crucial role, pitching a complete game.

Pickens delivered a staggering performance, allowing just two runs on three hits while registering eight strikeouts. This victory marked her second complete game of the postseason, keeping Tennessee’s championship hopes alive after losing the opening game of the series.

“Our goal today was just to get to Sunday, and I was going to do anything it took to make that happen,” Pickens said. Her resilience and stellar performance are key themes for the Lady Vols throughout the tournament.

In a remarkable highlight, Pickens recorded a pitch at 79.4 mph, setting a new NCAA record for the fastest pitch in softball history. “I had no idea,” Pickens commented about breaking the record for the second time this season. “It’s cool that it’s happened twice now.”

Defensively, Tennessee improved significantly since the previous game, resulting in a tense battle between Pickens and Nebraska’s ace Jordy Bahl. Although Bahl allowed only three runs throughout all seven innings, it wasn’t enough to overcome Tennessee’s early lead.

The Lady Vols scored first with an impressive home run by Ella Dodge in the first inning, followed by a sacrifice fly from McKenna Gibson that added a crucial third run in the third inning. Despite the tension and pressure, the Tennessee team remained optimistic and focused on their objectives.

Head coach Karen Weekly praised the team’s perseverance. “I felt like we were getting better and better,” she said, showcasing the growth and confidence within the squad.

Tennessee will face Nebraska again on May 25 for the final game of the series. The matchup is set to be a highly anticipated event, with both teams eager to secure a place at the Women’s College World Series.

“Jordy’s a great ballplayer, a lot of respect to her and how she plays the game,” Pickens remarked, highlighting the mutual respect amongst competitors in this intense rivalry.
